ZONE CHANGE - Parts of Zone A Might be Part of Zone B?

I was reading my Ohio Outdoors Newspaper the other day, and there is an article on a "zone change" for zone's A and B. Counties Williams, Fulton, Lucas, Defiance, Henry, Paulding, and Van Wert Counties are being switched over to Zone B for the 2010-2011 deer season. A vote will be taken on April 7th during a regular scheduled meeting.
"It may be a one or two-year thing," DNR officer Mike Tonkovich said during an interview. "More bucks means more deer." I guess it will help the sport.

... I Can't Really Explain This

I had to double take on this too, a velvet 8 point buck IN JANUARY? There's only one possible explanation: this is a cactus buck. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a buck that somewhere in it's lifetime, had lost it's testicles (haha, very funny), or was born without them. They aren't very common to kill one is a trophy of its own class. But just imagine the look on Jerry Banja's face when he walked up to it. The heavy rack green scored 148 and was shot in the black-power season in Belle Valley, Ohio on January 10th. Click on the picture for a larger view (Article grabbed from Ohio Outdoor News).

Eagle Sightings in Ohio - I've Seen Them Too!

"I keep hearing more and more about people seeing eagles in Ohio, but I don't believe them. They're just trying to get attention."
Well, I thought that is June, 2009. And on the July, 4th weekend, I look up and say, "Hey, look at all those hawks." My family all looks for a little bit and my grandpa says, "THOSE AREN'T HAWKS! THOSE ARE EAGLES!" That's when I spotted the white tail and head. I thought that I would never see an eagle, let alone 4 of them. "Well that was a once in a lifetime opportunity," I said. Well about 4 weeks ago, my dad and I went to pick up some tree stands from a property we hunt and of course said, "Hey, look at that hawk. He just flew off that telephone poll," and, you guessed it, my dad yells, "THAT'S AN EAGLE!" We drove a little further and spotted two of them catching fish in a part of lake that had some ice melted off. Watching them dive in the water and coming up was very cool and exciting for me. So I'm glad I got to see them.

Poaching Ring is Caught and Charged... Big Time!

In Jackson, Ohio, locals are being charged and sued because of a poaching ring they have been running for a while it looks like. Ohio Outdoor News says...
"The suspects are accused of poaching deer and wild turkey in Jackson and Gallia counties, according to the DNR Division of Wildlife. The eight individuals have been issued 114 summonses for wildlife crimes following a two month investigation into an alleged local poaching ring."
This is just my personal opinion, I would put them away for life. Those are the people that ruin and take away the wildlife and have an impact on our sport. Here are some more facts from
Ohio Outdoor News...
"-Jackie W. Farley II, 33, of Thurman - Hunting without permission (five charges), failure to attach a temporary tag to deer (four charges), loaded firearm in a motor vehicle (three charges), failure to permanently check deer (four charges), hunting deer after sunset, attempt to take deer over limit (three charges), taking deer over season limit, taking second antlered buck in a season, taking third antlered buck in a season, shooting from a public roadway, possession of untagged deer parts (two charges), possession of untagged wild turkey parts (six charges), possession of uncertified ginseng, and litter.

They receive no mercy from me.

Hey! Lake Eire Anglers...

I have recently found out that from March 1st to April 30th, The bag limit on Walleye is four. That's right four only with the 15 inch minimum. Well good luck fishing in THIS weather!

I Don't Know if You Knew, But I Didn't!

On October 19th, supposedly this buck was killed in Ohio with a crossbow. The buck was said to score over 320 inches! Now to my looking over, this DOES beat the previous Ohio nontypical bow kill record. The buck killed in 2000 by a fellow named Mike Beatty shot a buck scoring 304 6/8" making this buck even more extraordinary. Both bucks are featured in this report

(Mystery buck on top, Beatty buck on the bottom).

Ice Fishers Are Still Doing Good, But...

The ice fishing is doing excellent this time of the year. But reports say that the steelhead catch rate is very, very slow.

NEW RECORD WHITETAIL BUCK WITH LOGEST MAIN BEAMS EVER!

Bryan Stephens, an Ohio hunter, took the meaning "monster buck" to amazing levels. Bryan took this monster with a muzzleloader during the Ohio gun season. Here is a quote from the field and stream website...
"Brian Stephens dropped this 18-point colossus at 80 yards with his .50 caliber T/C muzzleloader. The enormous buck should shatter The Buckeye State’s nontypical muzzleloader record and will almost certainly set the new mark for whitetail beam length."
The buck was officially scored 250 1/8” gross and 232 5/8” net! The main beams on Byran's kill were both over 34 inches (with the previous world record being just over 33 inches)! Great to see a buck like this in Ohio!
